About UnpluggedWatts

UnpluggedWatts is an independent reference site about portable, off-grid power: portable power stations, solar generators, folding solar panels and the batteries inside them.

We answer practical questions such as how long a power station can run a fridge, what size you need for a CPAP machine on a camping trip, or how many watts of solar it takes to recharge a battery in a day.

What we cover

  • Portable power stations and solar generators: capacity, output, charging and real runtime.
  • Folding and portable solar panels: how much they produce and how to pair them with a battery.
  • Use cases: camping, van and RV trips, power outages, and apartments where a fixed installation is not an option.
  • Tools: calculators that show their formulas, so you can check the math yourself.

What we don’t cover

  • Permanent electrical work, such as connecting equipment to a home’s electrical panel or wiring a house or RV. That is a job for a licensed electrician.
  • Rooftop solar for homes.
  • Electric vehicle batteries.
  • Medical advice. When we write about medical devices, we only discuss power draw and runtime, and we tell you to check with the device maker and your doctor.

How we work

We do not physically test products. Our articles are built on manufacturer spec sheets and manuals, public data from organizations such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and calculations we show step by step. When a number is an assumption, we say so. You can read the full process on our How We Research page.

How the site is funded

UnpluggedWatts may earn money from display ads and from affiliate links. If you buy through one of those links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we recommend. Details are on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
